SIGGRAPHY 07 electronic theater highlights

codehunters by mtv

Tab attended this year’s SIGGRAPHY and brought back some exciting news and trends in the computer graphic world. She ran a lunch brownbag to share some of the noticeable short films playing in this year’s electronic theater.

Of all the short films we sampled, my personal favorite is CodeHunter by MTV (animation created by Axis Animation). One of the game artists said there’s a CodeHunter game in the making. It’s a shame most games based on hit tv shows or movies don’t live up to its original creations.

If you are interested, the complete playlist is available on YouTube.

As a bonus, Tab did a quick demo on “PLASMA PONG”. It’s classic pong with a twist of techno music, interactive screen saver, and physics. I enjoyed the music so much I downloaded a version to my Mac.

Pixelgirl Shop

pixelgirl shopRecently I ordered this Cheery necklace by Amy Secrest on Pixelgirl Shop. I don’t normally purchase accessories online without trying it out. But this is one of those impulsive buying moments. Beside, the necklace looked really cute and unique in the photo.

The necklace arrived neatly in a clear sealed bag, with a little pine, a Pixelgirl Shop sticker, and a pretty little receipt that can also serve as a thank you note from Amy.

What a happy moment this package had brought to my day!

Go shop here for that special shopping experience, and to support quality goods made by independent artists! http://www.pixelgirlshop.com.

Web 2.0 Tutorials Round-Up

Monday, March 12th, 2007

http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2007/03/10/web-20-tutorials-round-up/

A plethora of tutorials to make pretty graphics and shinny buttons. But what’s with the title “web 2.0”? I almost junked it at the first glance when this is forwarded to me from a co-worker. Gotta exercise with caution when applying buzzword.

Gorgeous gorgeous site, but so hard to navigate. As I’m currently involved in website architecture and usability at work, I am increasingly bugged by ‘designer’ sites that hide or have no obvious navigation menu.

What’s the value of a website that can’t be browsed with ease? Users can’t get to the stunning graphics, the rocking animation, breathtaking photography… then what’s the point making them available online? It is hardly ‘available’ if one can’t get to it.

One doesn’t run into a good collection of surrealistic artists’ works such as this one everyday.

Personally I think good landscape and animal photos are the hardest to take. John Hyde manages to capture the moment at its peak, aside from his skillful composition, filter and color treatments. His photos have such qualities that almost every picture is a story of its own. I really dig it.

I am going to start posting more design related topics in the blog. I like how Erich uses his blog as library of information for design and inspiration.
